About

I started tutoring as a chemistry aide in high school. The job was mostly making copies and setting up labs, but every so often a student would drop in with a question and I'd stop what I was doing to work through it. I spent most of that year hoping someone would interrupt me.
What I liked then is what I still like now: finding the exact place where it stopped making sense. It's almost never the thing they say they're stuck on. Once you find it, the rest usually goes over quickly.
Since then I finished a mechanical engineering degree, interned at Disney, Corning, and Texas Instruments, and now work as an AI engineer at a large consulting firm. Most of what I tutor is math I still use.
I'm also not that far out of these classes myself. I remember which parts are genuinely hard and which ones only look hard, and I've found that matters more than knowing the material cold.
AI and homework
I build AI systems for a living, which means I've watched a lot of people use them badly. Your kid is going to use ChatGPT on their homework — that part isn't really a question anymore.
What matters is the difference between using it to skip the work and using it to find the part they don't understand. The first one shows up on the next test. The second one is genuinely useful, and I'll show them how to tell which is which.

Ready when you are
Tell me what your student is working on when you book — the more specific the better. It's the difference between showing up ready and spending the first fifteen minutes working out where they're stuck.
